Game Setup

  1. Haunt books. Set aside Secrets of Survival and Traitor's Tome. Nobody reads them until the haunt starts.
  2. Explorers. Each player chooses a character and takes the matching character board, figure and coloured base. Push the figure into its base.
  3. Traits. Put 4 clips on your board, each pointing to the green number on one trait: your starting Might, Speed, Knowledge and Sanity.
  4. Dice. Put all 8 dice where everyone can reach them.
  5. Card decks. Sort the Event, Item and Omen cards by type and shuffle each into its own face-down deck.
  6. Reference cards. Monster and Traitor reference cards face up where everyone can see them. Each player takes a Player reference card.
  7. Starting tiles. Put the three starting tiles in the middle of the table, 8–10 inches apart: the Entrance Hall tile (Ground Floor), the Basement Landing and the Upper Landing.
  8. Room tiles. Shuffle the other room tiles into one face-down stack. The back of each tile shows which floors it can go on.
  9. Enter. Put every explorer on the Entrance Hall.
  10. Scenario. Together, read the 5 Scenario cards and choose one. It explains why you're here and decides which haunt you'll face. Return the rest to the box.
  11. Tokens aside. Keep the Number Track, its pointer and the tokens nearby. Some come into play when the haunt starts.
  12. First player. Check the birthdays on your character boards. The explorer whose birthday comes next goes first; play passes clockwise.

Birthdays for all 12 explorers are listed on the How to play tab.

Your Explorer

Each character board has four traits, tracked with clips: Might, Speed, Knowledge and Sanity. Traits are public; never hide them.

  • Green numbers are your starting values.
  • The lowest value, next to the skull, is critical (shown in red).
  • Each board is double-sided: two different explorers of the same colour.
